Korean Monster Bodybuilder Chul Soon Hwang

Being dubbed as the “Asian Arnold”, Chul Soon is a Korean bodybuilder who’s famous for his incredible physique; featuring “chiseled” 8-pack abs and an “old-school”, classic physique look.

Since he first started competing in 2009, Chul has become a sensation in his homeland and beyond; winning numerous bodybuilding contests throughout the U.S. and Korea, as well as appearing in commercials and TV shows.

However, Chul’s life wasn’t always glamorous and successful. As a youngster, he was often disrespected for his undernourished looks. Ironically, this is what made him turn to the weight room, and begin his journey towards success.

Biography

Motivation for Starting the Fitness Journey

Chul’s training life and desire for lifting weights started “emerging” when he was 20. His reason for beginning this journey was simple – he wanted to gain respect from people around him, and transform his “scrawny” body into something admirable.

When talking about why he started getting into fitness Chul said; “When I turned 20 I had a very thin body and weighed only 57kg (125lb). I was treated with disrespect. People looked down at me in situations like if I was returning goods to a store, or helping someone or speaking to strangers.”

When he first started training, Chul would do 3000 crunches a day, almost on a daily basis. His training sessions would sometimes last more than two or three hours. However, he later realized that this type of training wasn’t the most efficient for building muscle; instead, he started following a structured workout program, and began focusing on his diet.

After he changed his approach, Chul began noticing tremendous progress on his physique. Three years later, he could no longer recognize himself – his physique was massive, proportionate, and “shredded”.

Career in Fitness

With several years of weightlifting experience under his belt, Chul started working as a personal trainer in one of the gyms in Seoul, South Korea. Later, in 2009, he took his career in fitness one step further by starting to compete in bodybuilding shows.

In his debut contest, the 2009 Musclemania World Championships, Chul finished in an impressive 2nd place (light-weight category).

From that point on, he started competing on a regular basis, bringing more size and better conditioning each year – by the end of 2010, he’d sculpted such an impressive physique that he won the 2010 Musclemania World at Fitness America Weekend contest; earning his Pro Card along with the title.

Since then, Chul has shown no signs of slowing down – he’s become a celebrity fitness trainer, and has appeared in numerous Korean and American commercials, TV shows, and magazines.

“Now that I am much bigger, people treat me with more respect. They call me the ‘Asian Sensation’, ‘Asian Pride’ and the ‘Asian Arnold’.”

Training

Chul had to spend years in the gym, using trial and error as his guide, to build his “classic, old-school” looking physique.

He mainly focused on compound movements that work multiple muscle groups, such as bench press, squat, pull-ups, and deadlifts. Chul believes that just these four exercises can be enough to build an impressive physique that resembles those of Golden Era.

However, he still adds some isolation movements to his workouts; they help him shape the muscle, and even out any strength or size imbalances he might have. Some of these movements include cable flys, rear delt dumbbell flys, and wide-grip lat pulldowns.

Nutrition

Chul follows a strict diet based on high protein, moderate carbs, and moderate fat intake. Most of his carbs are consumed in the morning and after a workout, whilst his protein and fats are taken throughout the day, especially in the evening before bed.

Some of the more common foods and drinks he consumes are bananas, chicken, brown rice, whey protein shakes, and avocados.

Chul eats a meal every three hours, each meal weighing around half a pound

Idols and Influences

Looking at his physique, it’s easy to see that some of Chul’s main idols in bodybuilding are Arnold Schwarzenegger and the other Golden Era greats.

The v-taper, huge arms and shoulders, thick calves and legs, and chiseled abs are the staple of Chul’s hard work in the gym, and representation of his goals in fitness.

With his performances on the stage, Chul hopes to show that bodybuilding isn’t always about just getting as big as possible, but also, looking symmetrical.

However, this doesn’t mean that he underestimates the hard work of today’s contemporary bodybuilders, but for him, the ultimate physique is the “classic” one.

Mojtaba Notarki

Born in Iran, Mojtaba Notarki first stepped on the bodybuilding stage in the mid-2000s and boasts one of the top physiques in the country.

Mojtaba’s inspiration comes from setting new goals and seeing them through. He’s always looked up to other successful bodybuilders and aspired to become the best version of himself.

In 2012, Mojtaba’s ambitions & hard work led him to earn his Pro Card and WBFF World Championships trophy.

Moving on dosen’t mean you forget things, it just means you have to accept what happened and continue living.”

Training
Just like anyone else, Mojtaba also has days in the gym where he doesn’t feel motivated to train. However, it’s his mentality during these moments that sets him apart from the rest. Mojtaba is willing to grit it out no matter how little motivation he has – sticking to the training plan and seeing it through.

This mentality is even more important during Mojtaba’s competition preparations. During this phase, Mojtaba has to be extra diligent about his training and diet to be able to step on stage in his best version.

Basic Bodybuilding Approach
As for his workouts, Mojtaba sticks to the good old fashioned heavy multi-joint exercises. He avoids machines and all the ‘fancy’ equipment and instead trains like Golden Era bodybuilders. Sticking to 8-12 reps between sets and focusing on his mind-muscle connection.

Mojtaba also uses cardio to get lean before a contest or a photo shoot. However, cardio is reduced during his off-season where he tries to pack on as much muscle as possible.

Nutrition
Mojtaba’s diet is all about fueling his body with healthy calories. This includes getting enough protein to grow his muscles, carbohydrates to have the energy for workouts, and good fats to support his hormones and general health.

Naturally, Mojtaba will reduce his calories from carbs when he wants to get leaner.  He’ll also cut back on fats as they’re very calorie-dense. In terms of supplements, he might increase his vitamin D3, zinc, and magnesium as this helps to keep his testosterone levels high and preserves muscle during a cut.

What we can learn from Mojtaba Notarki
Something we can learn from Mojtaba Notarki is to not make fitness more complicated than it needs to be. If you want to build a great physique, stick to the basics – a good diet with plenty of protein and vegetables, regular training regimen, and quality sleep.

Above all, remember that without consistency there’s no progress. As we’ve seen from Mojtaba, he will complete his workouts even if he doesn’t feel like it – sticking to his goals in order to achieve them. With this kind of approach, you too can achieve greatness.

The Ukraine’s Vlad Suhoruchko may not have been a serious threat to winning at the 2021 Mr. Olympia, but it was still going to be exciting to see him compete. Unfortunately this will not happen, as travel issues have forced him out of the contest.

Suhoruchko earned his invite to the 2021 Mr. Olympia on the back of a busy season competing in a variety of shows. While he did not get any wins, he earned a ton of points by placing high in the Romania Musclefest Pro, Portugal Pro, and Europa Spain Pro, which was enough to gain an invite to the biggest bodybuilding contest in the world.

Unfortunately it seems that he will be unable to compete, despite getting an invitation. He posted to his Instagram to reveal that he is having troubles getting his visa to compete in the Unite States by the time the action takes place in Orlando, Florida,

“Sadly say it but it’s was last competition on this year . I am Out from MR ⭕️ @mrolympiallc 2021 because of problem with visa … next year I will be there for sure and with better version of my self ⏳⚔️” Suhoruchko wrote.

This is obviously a massive disappointment for Vlad, who had clearly worked hard to be able to compete at the Olympia. That being said, at just 25 years old, there is still a lot of potential for him to have huge performances at future Olympias.

There is no denying the potential that Vlad Suhoruchko holds, especially given how massive physique is so early on in his career. While he has not managed to reach that potential just yet, the future is clearly bright for this Ukrainian prospect.

As made evident by the remaining stacked roster, the 2021 Mr. Olympia is going to be a great contest, even without Vlad Shuoruchko. That being said, this does not take away from how disappointing it is that he will not be able to compete after having worked so hard to qualify for the biggest contest in the sport.
